Using the Library and Reference Room

The library and reference room are located on the second floor of Kawasaki International Center. They collect and provide information and materials on issues related to international exchanges and relations, as well as the social landscape, economics, history and culture of Japan and countries around the world. The goal is to promote the internationalization of the region and improve cross-cultural understanding.

10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Holidays
Year-end/New Year’s holidays (December 29 to January 3)
* The library and reference room are subject to closure as needed for inspections and maintenance of facilities and equipment, the inspection and organization of the materials collected, etc.
Eligible users
Users must be in the fourth year of elementary school or above. (A parent or guardian must accompany any children younger than that.)
* Users studying for school admission, certification or other exams are not allowed to use the library’s reading desks.
* Individuals cannot check out materials. Only schools and other related organizations within Kawasaki City may check out materials.

How to Use the Library and Reference Room

  • Users may freely view the books, magazines, newspapers, CDs and DVDs in the reference room’s collection.
  • Users may not eat, drink or smoke in the reference room.
  • Users may not talk on mobile phones within the reference room. Please set your mobile devices to silent mode.

Using Reading Desks

  • Please use the reading desks only to view materials in the room’s collection.
  • Users studying for school admission, certification or other exams are not allowed to use the library’s reading desks.
  • Please do not leave your belongings unattended for an extended period of time.

Using the Copy Machine (¥10 per copy)

  • Do not use the copy machine for any purpose other than copying materials in the room. For other materials, please use the copier to the right of the reception desk on the first floor.
  • You can copy parts of materials that you need to the extent allowed by the Copyright Act (i.e., less than half of the total number of pages).
  • Fill out and submit a material copy request form to the service counter.

Reading Books

  • When you are finished reading a book, please return it to the service counter or a book return stand. Do not return it to the stacks yourself.

Reading Magazines

  • When you are finished reading a magazine, please return it to its original location.
  • Archived back issues of magazines can also be viewed upon request. Fill out and submit a request form to the service counter.

Reading Newspapers

  • You must read newspapers at the newspaper reading desks. Please do not read them at the book reading desks.
  • Please avoid monopolizing an issue for an extended period of time.
  • Please handle newspapers carefully and avoid soiling or tearing them.
  • Please turn the pages of newspapers quietly.
  • Archived back issues can also be viewed upon request. Fill out and submit a request form to the service counter.

Using Multimedia Booths to View/Listen to CDs and DVDs (Two Booths)

  • Each user is allowed to view or listen to one item at a time.
  • Take the empty case of the CD or DVD you wish to view or listen to the service counter. A staff member will provide you with headphones and the multimedia itself.

Using Your Own Laptop (One Computer Desk)

  • Please tell a staff member at the service counter if you wish to bring your own laptop. Please note that the following conditions apply:
    1. You must be using it to utilize the room’s materials.
    2. You will not be able to charge your laptop under any circumstances.
  • Laptops must be used at the computer desk; they cannot be used at reading desks.
  • An Internet connection is not available.
