To the Residents of Kawasaki - Special Announcement re: H1N1 Influenza

Oct. 28th, 2009

The Chairperson of Kawasaki H1N1 Influenza Task Force
The Mayor of Kawasaki City - Takao Abe

In Kawasaki City the number of people who have had H1N1 Influenza has been increasing since the end of September. Moving into October, the number has been approaching close to 30 people, and this number is the set point at which an “Alarm” must be raised.
The total number of the patients in Kawasaki City per week exceeds about 10,000 people, especially the number of the patients who are 9 years old and under.

If infection by influenza spreads rapidly, medical facilities will have increased workloads, and it will likely become difficult for patients suffering from serious health conditions to receive proper care.
Please practice the following in order to avoid the above-mentioned scenario.

  1. If experiencing difficulty in breathing, rapid breathing, convulsions, or some other unusual symptom, please go to see a doctor immediately.
  2. Before going, please call to notify the medical facility in advance, and wear a mask in order to avoid infecting others.
  3. It is highly recommended, for those who are pregnant or who suffer from chronic diseases, such as asthma, diabetes etc, that they consult their family doctors in advance regarding what to do in case of flu.
  4. For those who do not have any chronic diseases or any serious symptoms, please refrain from going to medical facilities at night, or during holidays, as they are under-staffed.
  5. If you have no symptoms, there is no need to have a test to find whether or not you are infected; therefore, please refrain from going to a medical facility merely to receive a medical certificate that states you are not infected.

Please maintain your current lifestyle and take courteous precautions “Not to be infected” and “Not to infect others”. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
