If Someone is Suddenly Ill or Injured

By dialing 119, you can call for an ambulance (free of charge).
Be sure to give the following information when you call:

  1. Say, “Kyuu-kyuu desu (We need an ambulance).”
  2. Say, “Kyuu-byou-nin (kega-nin) ga imasu (Someone is suddenly ill (injured)).”
  3. Give the name of the person who is suddenly ill (injured).
  4. Give the location / address and telephone number.

If There is a Fire

Please call the fire station by dialing 119 (free of charge).
Be sure to give the following information when you call:

  1. Give your name.
  2. Give the address (or location of thefire).

In addition, please yell “Kaji desu (There's a fire)!” to alert your neighbors.


If There is a Traffic Accident, Robbery, or Violence

Please call for a police car by dialing 110 (free of charge).
Be sure to give the following
information when you call:

  1. Give your name.
  2. Give the address (or location of the incident).
  3. Report what kind of incident has occurred.

Explain the Situation

  • There has been a robbery. = Dorobou desu.
  • There has been a traffic accident. = Koutsu jiko desu.
  • There is a fire. = Kaji desu.
  • I / We need an ambulance. = Kyukyusha wo yonde kudasai.
Emergency 110 and 119 calls are taken on a 24-hour basis.
The calls are free of charge.
